Supports Urinary Health & Fluid Dynamics
You may not know a lot about the role that purines and uric acid play in our bodies, so let’s dive in to understand what they are and the important roles they have in our health.
Naturally occurring, purines are in every cell in our bodies and are also in our foods and drinks. Purines are the building blocks for all living things, and even take part in forming our DNA. (The word ‘purine’ was coined from the words ‘pure urine’ in the late 1800’s, even though it’s not purines that are in our urine, but uric acid, which is made from purine.)
Excess purines are metabolized by the liver into uric acid, a by-product of nucleic acid, which is released into the blood. (You may remember from your high school science class that DNA is deoxyribonucleic acid.) Then the blood is filtered by our kidneys and the proper amount of uric acid stays in the blood to do important work that it needs to do, while the excess is excreted in our urine.
So now we know that uric acid is naturally produced in metabolic processes and is a normal component in both blood and urine. We need uric acid because it is an important antioxidant that neutralizes over 50% of health damaging free radicals that are in our bloodstream and helps protect our brains and blood vessels, even our very lives!
When our kidneys are happily filtering our blood and our urine output is normal, then our uric acid level generally stays in the range we need it to be in to do its job helping to keep our blood healthy. Because the excess is supposed to be flushed out through our urine, by taking care of our urinary system, which includes our kidneys, we help our bodies maintain a healthy homeostasis of uric acid in our blood.
How do we do this? We can help our bodies out with this important work with healthy lifestyle activities, good dietary practices, and when we need them, with the right herbs to support our kidneys and urinary system and the overall fluid dynamics in our bodies.
Diet plays a large role in this balance, and is in fact, about 30% of the picture, as there are foods that greatly increase the purines in our bodies. - Don’t drink beer. Beer, due to its yeast content, has the highest purine content of all consumables. If you do drink alcohol, wine is a better choice.
- Don’t drink sodas with high fructose corn syrup and/or phosphoric acid. The HFCS and phosphoric acid increase serum acid levels.
- Don’t eat organ meats which are the highest meat sources of purines. Red meats are higher in purines than white meats. Eat red meat in smaller amounts and only occasionally.
- Limit shellfish and cold-water fish. Shellfish, cold water fish like tuna, salmon, sardines, and even trout have higher levels of purines than other fish.
- Reduce salt and salty foods, bacon and salty fish.
- Don’t do fasting and rapid weight loss programs, as this can temporarily increase acid levels.
- Drink eight 8 oz glasses of water a day. (That’s good for all of us.) During tender times, increase that amount to flush your system.
- Eat citrus. Vitamin C decreases acid levels. Oranges, grapefruit, pineapple, strawberries, even broccoli and sweet and hot red peppers help.
- Eat lots of green veggies, both leafy and starchy greens.
- Eat plenty of red and purple fruits and vegetables, which have anthocyanin antioxidants: cherries, beets, purple cabbage, blueberries.
- Drink 100% unsweetened tart cherry juice or eat cherries, which have anthocyanin antioxidants.
- The proteins in milk help reduce acid levels. (Use low-fat milk and low-fat dairy.)
- Exercise and maintain a healthy weight. Stay physically fit.
- Reduce refined sugars and carbohydrate intake to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
- Believe it or not, coffee is beneficial to acid balance when used in moderation.
- Probiotics help feed the beneficial gut flora so not only does your digestion function better, but your overall immune and urinary systems function better, as well.
