Running on Empty? Reclaim Your Energy!

Thrive, Don’t Just Survive!

Have you ever felt exhausted before your day even starts?

Do you crave sugar, snacks, or caffeine just to keep going?

Have you wondered if being “tired all the time” is simply your new normal?

I’ve been there! I know what it’s like to run on empty.

As a teenager, I was a high achiever—a highly driven honors student who traveled across the Western United States and Canada to compete in horse shows, including national championship shows in both countries. I was always pushing myself to the limits.

Then came college, marriage, music and theater performances, and motherhood. I had five babies in five and a half years (including twins).

Life was full, demanding – and exhausting! One challenge followed another, and stress became the norm rather than the exception. I pushed through because my family depended on me, but my physical and mental well-being suffered. At times, I felt like I was barely surviving, certainly not thriving.

I felt like a wrung-out sponge! Years later, I understand much better how to balance life and either avoid or climb out of the cycle of exhaustion you are probably struggling with.

I know how easy it is to believe that exhaustion is simply part of being a busy mom, a working woman, a caregiver, or the person others rely on.

You can do more than survive. Reclaim your energy and thrive again! Read on for important tips to thrive in your busy life.

First, let's look at how stress affects your body, why your HPA axis matters, and simple ways to support your overall wellness.

Life Is Complicated—and Stress Is Real

Today we juggle children, work, household responsibilities, finances, relationships, school activities, and countless other demands. Even wonderful things can feel overwhelming when there is too much to do and too little time to recover. And the stress builds…

Stress isn't just an emotion. Your body responds to it physically and hormonally.

When your brain detects a threat or challenge, it triggers the body's fight-or-flight response. Your heart rate may increase, blood pressure may rise, and stored energy becomes more readily available.

This response is helpful when you need to react quickly. But when stress continues day after day, your body may have fewer opportunities to recover, throwing everything out of balance.

That's where your HPA axis comes into play.

Understanding Your HPA Axis

HPA stands for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal. It's a communication system that links your brain and adrenal glands and helps coordinate your hormonal response to stress.

Think of it as a three-part relay.

1. The hypothalamus: The alert center

Located in your brain, the hypothalamus responds to stress signals by releasing corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH).

2. The pituitary gland: The messenger

CRH signals the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which then travels through the bloodstream to the adrenal glands.

3. The adrenal glands: The responders

Located above your kidneys, the adrenal glands produce cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline, and other key hormones.

These hormones have different jobs:

  • Cortisol helps regulate metabolism, blood glucose, inflammation, and the body's response to stress. It also plays an important role in your daily sleep-wake cycle.
  • Adrenaline helps prepare you for immediate action by raising your heart rate and mobilizing energy.
  • Noradrenaline supports alertness and attention while helping regulate blood vessel constriction and blood pressure.

These hormones are not the enemy! Your body needs them. The goal is to support healthy regulation and recovery, not to eliminate the stress response.

When stress becomes prolonged, it can lead to disrupted sleep, mood changes, difficulty concentrating, and persistent exhaustion. This condition is called HPA Axis dysregulation.

Running on Empty: Recognizing the Signs

Have you ever awakened feeling as though you never really rested? Do ordinary tasks sometimes feel harder than they should?

Ongoing stress and insufficient recovery may contribute to:

  • Persistent fatigue and low energy
  • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability or mood changes
  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Feeling overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities
  • Changes in appetite or cravings
  • Reduced motivation and resilience

The term adrenal exhaustion is sometimes used informally to describe feeling depleted after prolonged stress. Persistent fatigue can have many causes, including sleep problems, anemia, thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies, and other health conditions. (These symptoms may need to be evaluated by your primary care provider.)

The key takeaway is this: You don't have to ignore exhaustion or simply push harder. You can start by giving your body the everyday support it needs.

Five Foundations for Reclaiming Your Energy

You don't have to change everything overnight. Start with the basics. Simple habits can make a meaningful difference over time.

1. Hydration: Give Your Body Water

Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

  • Begin your morning with a glass of water.
  • Keep a water bottle nearby throughout the day.
  • Drink regularly rather than waiting until you're very thirsty.

2. Nutrition: Your Body Needs More Than Calories

Your body needs nutritious food to support energy production, metabolism, and normal hormone function.

Focus on:

  • Protein for muscles and tissue maintenance
  • Healthy fats and essential fatty acids
  • Mineral-rich foods, including leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and legumes
  • A variety of vegetables, fruits, and other nutrient-dense foods

Try not to rely on caffeine and sugary snacks as your primary energy source. Balanced meals and regular nourishment provide a better foundation for wellness. Nutrition – not empty calories.

3. Sleep: Make Recovery a Priority

Sleep isn't a luxury. It's essential maintenance for your body and brain.

Try to establish a consistent bedtime, develop a calming evening routine, limit stimulating screen time before bed, and make your sleeping environment as comfortable as possible.

If you're exhausted, rest isn't laziness. It's responding to a legitimate and essential need.

4. Emotional Wellness: Make Room for Calm

It’s not possible to eliminate every source of stress, but you can create small moments of recovery.

Consider:

  • Meditation or prayer
  • Mindfulness and comfortable, slow breathing
  • Journaling or hobbies you enjoy
  • Walking, yoga, or tai chi
  • Time outdoors
  • A calming cup of herbal tea

Even five minutes of intentional quiet can be a helpful starting point. You deserve moments in your day when you aren't responsible for anyone or anything.

5. Botanical Nutrition: Explore Plant-Based Support

Plants contain naturally occurring compounds and essential micronutrients that have been used in traditional wellness practices for generations. Some herbs are traditionally associated with stress resilience, relaxation, and cognitive wellness.

Adaptogens are herbs traditionally used to support the body's response to stress. Examples include astragalus, eleuthero, rhodiola, holy basil, and Asian ginseng.

Nervines are herbs traditionally used to promote relaxation and nervous-system health. Examples include lavender, passionflower, chamomile, lemon balm, and skullcap.

Brain Support, including ginkgo and gotu kola, is commonly used in traditional approaches to cognitive wellness.

Evidence varies across herbs, preparations, and intended uses. Botanical supplements are best viewed as additions to a comprehensive wellness routine—not replacements for nutritious food, restorative sleep, medical care, or treatment of an underlying condition.

  • Gotu kola herb and ginkgo leaf — botanicals commonly featured in traditional approaches to cognitive wellness.
  • Wood betony herb — a traditional botanical used in herbal wellness practices.
  • Licorice root — traditionally used in several herbal preparations; it requires particular care because it can affect blood pressure and potassium levels.

Adrenal Balance is intended as a botanical wellness supplement. It has not been established as a treatment for HPA-axis dysfunction, adrenal insufficiency, or any other medical condition.

Self-Care Is Not Self-ish!

Let's return to the most important part of this conversation: YOU.

Your health matters. Your energy matters. Your emotional well-being matters.

When you're constantly running on empty, even the things you love can start to feel like burdens. Relationships may grow strained, decisions may feel overwhelming, and the joy you once found in life can feel harder to reach.

Taking care of yourself doesn't mean putting yourself above everyone else. It means recognizing that you, too, deserve your own care.

Start small.

Drink that glass of water.

Eat a nourishing meal.

Step outside for a few minutes.

Take a few slow breaths.

Give yourself permission to rest.

Build habits that support your body, and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

You don't have to do everything perfectly. You simply need to begin.

You Were Made for More Than Survival

Life will always have demands. There will always be another task, another responsibility, and another person who needs something from you.

But your life is about more than keeping all the plates spinning.

It's about having the energy to enjoy the people you love, the clarity to make decisions, the resilience to navigate difficult seasons, and the capacity to appreciate the good things around you.

At Cedar Bear Naturales, we believe informed choices, nourishing habits, and thoughtfully selected botanical products can all play a role in a comprehensive approach to wellness.

So take a breath. Give yourself permission to take care of yourself!

You don't have to run on empty. Here's to reclaiming your energy and learning to thrive, not just survive!
