The Heart: A Remarkable Engine of Life

The heart is an extraordinary organ. This four-chambered muscle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs and oxygen-rich blood throughout the body—every minute of every day for our entire lives. When it comes to keeping us alive and thriving, the heart is truly our body’s most vital muscle.

Weighing just 9–12 ounces and roughly the size of your fist, the heart sits slightly left of center in the chest. It beats between 60 and 100 times per minute—about 30 million times per year and more than 2.5 billion times by mid-life! Remarkably, it even has its own electrical system to maintain this rhythm.

The heart is the center of the cardiovascular (circulatory) system, a vast network of arteries, veins, and capillaries that delivers oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to every cell while removing metabolic wastes. Blood circulates through the entire body in under a minute. Laid end to end, these vessels would stretch more than 60,000 miles—over twice around the Earth.

Because the circulatory system touches every system in the body, heart health affects everything—energy, cognition, immunity, and emotional well-being.

Why Heart Health Is Personal to Me

Heart health isn’t just professional for me—it’s deeply personal.

I lost my son in his twenties to an aortic dissection caused by a rare genetic anomaly. While this condition is uncommon, it underscored for me how critical healthy tissue strength and elasticity are to life itself.

Years later, we nearly lost my husband and partner Carl, Cedar Bear’s founder, to undiagnosed heart disease. After years of recurring illness that was misattributed to “walking pneumonia,” a simple EKG and follow-up treatment revealed extensive heart damage from silent heart attacks and congestive heart failure. Emergency open-heart surgery and a quintuple bypass saved his life. Only afterward did we learn that heart disease ran in his family.

Modern medicine did something miraculous for Carl—for which I am deeply grateful. But these experiences reinforced a powerful truth: heart issues can develop quietly, at any age, and even in people who prioritize their health.

Everyday Foundations for a Healthy Heart

Supporting heart health begins with daily choices:

  • Maintain a healthy weight: Belly fat and insulin resistance strain the heart. (See Blog on Blood Sugar Support, November 2025.)
  • Monitor blood pressure: Chronically elevated blood pressure damages the heart and blood vessels. (See Blood Pressure Support.)
  • Balance cholesterol: Cholesterol is essential to health—but balance matters. Have your cholesterol checked, and take measures to support a healthy cholesterol balance. (Check out Cholestero Balance.)
  • Hydrate well: Choose water and unsweetened herbal teas. Avoid soda pop with high-fructose corn syrup, which harms both heart health and blood sugar health.
  • Know your family health history: Awareness helps you provide early, proactive care, especially if there is a history of cardiovascular and heart issues in your extended family.
  • Eat well: A Mediterranean-style diet rich in vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins supports cardiovascular health. Include a variety of whole fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. (See Digestive Build for digestive support.)
  • Move your body: The heart is a muscle—it needs regular exercise, including walks, strength training, and cardio workouts, to maintain its tone.
  • Breathe deeply: Deep breathing exercises improve oxygenation, supporting heart, circulatory, and brain health.
  • Sleep: Rest is restorative for the heart and the entire body, so maintain a consistent sleep schedule. (See Sleep & Calming.)
  • Manage stress: Chronic stress directly impacts cardiovascular function. Take time for stress management support. Meditation, yoga, tai chi, favorite hobbies, and other activities help bring down stress levels. (See Adrenal Balance for herbal stress management support.)
