BIOHACKING PRE-DIABETES NATURALLY

BIOHACKING PRE-DIABETES NATURALLY

NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL DIABETES MONTH
by Jhoane Robinson

Did you know?

  • Over 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes—(that’s over 98 million people) and most of them don’t know that they have it.
  • More than 38 million adults in the U.S. have diabetes, and 1 in 5 don’t even know it.
  • The numbers are increasing for younger adults and children as well.
  • This rise in numbers is mainly due to poor diet, inactivity, and excessive weight.

These statistics are staggering—but here’s the good news: for most people, both type 2 diabetes and prediabetes are largely preventable.

There are steps we can take to protect our health from high blood sugar, insulin resistance, and related conditions such as high blood pressure and cholesterol. It starts with making healthier lifestyle choices—and sticking with them!

(By the way, both of my grandmothers had type 2 adult-onset diabetes, and several family members have prediabetes—so this health crisis is very important to me, too.)

Understanding Blood Sugar and Metabolic Health

There are two basic kinds of sugars:

  1. Glucose-based sugars – processed by the liver and used efficiently for energy.
  2. Fructose-based sugars – skip the liver and flood the cells directly.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and Corn Syrup (CS) are both commonly found in sweetened foods and beverages. Because they bypass the body’s insulin control, they overload cells with sugar, increasing the risk of insulin resistance, which is the most common form of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in the U.S.

Your best protection: cut down on added sugars, especially HFCS and CS. These sweeteners also accumulate in fat cells, making it more difficult for your body to burn stored fat for energy.

WHAT IS INSULIN?

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps transport glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream into cells, where it can be used for energy or stored for later use.

When everything functions properly, this system maintains a healthy blood sugar level—a process known as homeostasis.

WHAT IS INSULIN RESISTANCE?

When cells stop responding appropriately to insulin, sugar accumulates in the blood instead of being taken up by cells. Over time, this can result in prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Excess fat in the liver is strongly associated with insulin resistance.

WHAT IS PREDIABETES?

Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are elevated above normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. It’s your body’s early warning signal—and a key chance to make positive changes.

Red Flags and Risk Factors

  • Excess body fat, particularly around the abdomen, releases hormones that promote inflammation, which can contribute to insulin resistance.
  • Physical inactivity: Sitting for long periods is a significant risk. Moving around helps muscles absorb sugar and boosts insulin sensitivity.
  • Poor diet: Consuming processed carbs and sugars can significantly contribute to blood sugar imbalances.
  • Low thyroid function: Slows metabolism and glucose processing.
  • Stress and lack of sleep: Both raise cortisol levels, which disrupt insulin balance.

Note: If you have concerns about your blood sugar, blood pressure, or cholesterol, consult a healthcare professional.

WAYS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR HEALTH AND REDUCE RISK

Our bodies work hard for us every day—let’s support them! Small, consistent changes can significantly improve healthy blood sugar levels.

Move Your Body

Stay active! Regular exercise enhances insulin sensitivity and overall metabolic health.

  • Aerobic exercise (walking, cycling, swimming) for at least 30 minutes most days.
  • Resistance training should be performed 2–4 times a week to build muscle and support your metabolism.
  • Everyday activities, such as standing, walking, gardening, and stretching, all count.
  • Flexibility exercises (such as yoga and tai chi) help relieve stress and promote balance.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Even a small amount of weight loss can help improve blood sugar control.

Health Tip #1: Eat smaller portions, avoid second helpings, and stay hydrated—water helps kidney health and glucose control.

DIET MATTERS

Establish healthy, sustainable eating habits.

  • Carbs: Select whole, fiber-rich carbs such as vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Steer clear of refined sugars and starches.
  • Protein: Include lean or plant-based sources.
  • Healthy fats: Emphasize olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fish; reduce saturated fats and avoid trans fats.
  • Fiber and phytonutrients: Consume a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits to boost digestion and regulate blood sugar.
  • Gut support: Incorporate probiotic and prebiotic foods to promote a healthy microbiome.
  • Water: Stay hydrated—your kidneys need it to help regulate blood sugar.

Health Tip #2: Eat a wide variety of colorful vegetables to obtain a diverse range of nutrients and antioxidants.

REDUCE OR REMOVE

Avoid:

  • Sugary drinks, processed snacks, and fried foods.
  • Processed meats and packaged foods containing hidden sugars or trans fats.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and high intake of starchy foods like potatoes and corn.

Health Tip #3: Read labels—if it’s full of unrecognizable ingredients, skip it.
Health Tip #4: Shop the outer aisles of the grocery store—the freshest foods are found there!

SLEEP & STRESS

Chronic stress increases cortisol, which releases stored glucose and boosts inflammation.

  • Try relaxation techniques such as meditation, walking in nature, or deep breathing.
  • Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep.
  • Maintain a consistent daily routine for eating, exercising, and getting enough rest.
